La stessa immagine di Lost è di per sé una e molteplice: lo show costruisce, ricostruisce, interlaccia storie e personaggi nello spazio e nel tempo. Vorrebbe essere una storia (una grande scatola) che contiene tutti gli sviluppi possibili. Lost si spinge addirittura a fornire orientamenti e risposte interne alla narrazione rimandando al suo spazio esterno, spazio composto ora da un vastissimo universo (citazionistico) come quello letterario, cinematografico, televisivo, etc. (in senso lato potremmo chiamarlo culturale, anche di segno pop), ora da vere e proprie esperienze parallele (a loro volta citazionistiche) quali sono state prima tra tutte la Lost Experience per giungere fino alla più recente Damon, Carlton and a Polar Bear.
Insomma, tutta una grande deriva per andare incontro ad uno spettatore che quando si appassiona non vuole che la storia finisca, ma che allo stesso tempo appare consapevole, quasi certo, che ciò che sarà sopravvissuto, anche di marginale, difficilmente si rivelerà all’altezza. Sentimenti contrastanti, dubbi amletici… mescolati a del "sano" merchandising. Difficile perciò separarsi da Lost, andare oltre anche solo al suo expanded universe , ovvero tutto ciò che, pur non indispensabile, gli ruota attorno.
