Molti hanno riposto speranze forse illegittime in questo volume ufficiale, contando su rivelazioni ulteriori che potessero far luce su misteri ancora insoluti della serie, su aspetti lasciati - a detta di alcuni - con troppa leggerezza all'interpretazione dello spettatore. In realtà, come ribadiscono Damon Lindelof e Carlton Cuse in persona, che firmano la prefazione:
“this text will not confirm nor deny your theories about the show. It will provide clarity, and it’s a great reference guide, but what it does NOT provide are answers to the great unknown. It was incredibly important to us to maintain the purposeful interpretive quality of the show, and although it is frustrating at times to puzzle things out for yourself, the show was called LOST for a reason”. Ed è normale che sia così: probabilmente spiegazioni troppo puntuali avrebbero scontentato ancora più spettatori di quanti sono quelli rimasti delusi dal finale metafisico (consolatorio e pseudo-religioso, direbbero costoro), e di questo hanno mostrato chiara consapevolezza gli Autori, lanciandoci un ulteriore messaggio in questo senso con
The New Man in Charge (l'appendice ironicamente didascalica con protagonisti Hurley & Ben uscita solo su dvd nel cofanetto della 6a stagione). A più forte ragione, risulterebbe insultante per la funzione stessa dello spettatore una spiegazione extra-testuale da ricercarsi su un volume posteriore alla conclusione della serie. Sicché, la
Lost Encyclopedia è quello che promette, né più né meno: un compendio enciclopedico di luoghi, fatti e personaggi che sono stati visti nella serie - peraltro in una confezione da collezionisti che risulta oggetto irresistibile del desiderio per l'appassionato.
